Preparing for the Career Expo
Not sure how to prepare for the Career Expo or what to expect? We’ve gathered our best resources to help you get started.
- Know who’s coming. Check out the list of employers in Handshake and prioritize who you want to connect with. Do a quick scan of their website so you’re not asking questions like “What does your company do?”.
- Create or update your resume. For guidance on what to include, how to format, and examples to reference, check out our resume templates.
- Update your Handshake profile. Make sure your profile is up to date before the expo. When you check in using the QR code at an employer’s table, they’ll receive a list of the students who stopped by, which makes it easier for them to connect with you or follow up afterward.
- Your university ID for easy check-in.
- Multiple printed copies of your resume.
- A padfolio or folder (to keep things neat).
- A pen and paper (to jot down notes after conversations).
- Confidence – employers are there to meet YOU.
- Start with your intro. Introduce yourself (name, major, career goals, why you’re talking with them).
- Ask good questions. Skip “What does your company do?” and instead try:
- “What skills or experiences do you value most in interns/entry-level hires?”
- “What professional development opportunities do you offer early-career employees?”
- “What do undergraduate/graduate students usually contribute to your team?”
- Be professional but yourself. Smile, make eye contact, and show genuine interest.
- Aim for business casual or professional. Think neat, polished, and comfortable. You can schedule an appointment with our Career Clothing Closet to find an outfit, or check out our business casual and business professional tip sheets for guidance on what to wear.
- Visit your top-choice employers first.
- Take notes after each conversation (names, next steps, what stood out).
- Be open – you may discover opportunities with organizations you didn’t expect to be interested in.
- Send thank-you emails to employers you’re interested in within a day or two. Mention something specific from your conversations.
- Reflect on what went well and what you’d like to do differently next time.
