Women’s Community Updates from the Greene Center

Welcome to the Greene Center Women’s Community! I’m Amber Graham, our director of data and operations, and your author for this month’s post. You can look forward to hearing from me and my colleague Cait Larson monthly, as we both work to support all women students. We are also excited to ensure that our coverage of women’s career issues is intersectional, and brings forward the lived experiences for women of color, women with disabilities, women in nontraditional career paths, and international women.

Equal Pay – Did you know?

There are actually two different Women’s Equal Pay days each year, and the first one is this month on September 18th. While some progress has been made, the salary numbers (particularly for women of color, those with disabilities, and in male dominated fields) are still showing a deep impact at both the entry-level and lifetime earnings space.

If you are interested in learning more, you can see https://www.un.org/en/observances/equal-pay-day for more information on the actual holiday. You can also take an online course in salary negotiation through AAUW’s WorkSmart StartSmart program. We are also looking to host this workshop on our campus next March!

Celebrating Women in Business

September 22nd is American Business Women’s Day! To observe this, check out two new blog posts we recently added to our library.

  • We also wanted to highlight Ten good reasons for women to work in business, which highlights advice from Vickie Milazzo, author of “Wicked Success Is Inside Every Woman”, including her assertion that it is no longer necessary to downplay femininity, and enumerates all the skills you bring to being a woman in business.

Finally, the Forte Foundation is an organization founded to “launch women into fulfilling, significant careers through access to business education, professional development, and a community of successful women.” We have a robust campus chapter you may want to check out at https://ccc.rochester.edu/forte/home/, they host events throughout the year!

You can find articles, events specifically for women students, and more on our Women’s Community page. Next month, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (which actually starts September 15th!) we’ll be featuring some advice by and for Latina women in our community, so we hope you will check it out!

Have content suggestions for our community or page? Email us at amber.graham@rochester.edu or cait.lawson@rochester.edu, we look forward to hearing from you!
