Emergency Medicine Junior Specialist

Position description

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Davis invites applications for qualified Junior Specialists in the following sub-specialties: Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Care. Appointments will be 100%. Junior Specialist positions are short-term, two-year maximum appointments based on the needs of the research project.

I. Research in Specialized Areas (80%)
A. Junior Specialist appointees will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on Emergency Medicine care for pediatric patients and are responsible for assisting Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) research staff with clinical studies conducted in the Emergency Department.

a. Review and maintain competency of study protocols and procedures for Emergency Medicine and PECARN research studies starting up and currently enrolling patients.

b. Participate in screening, recruitment, and enrollment of Emergency Department patients into approved research studies.

c. Conduct other study procedures as part of this work including data collection (interviews/questionnaires), abstracting data from electronic medical records according to study protocols; inputting abstracted data; storing and shipping samples according to appropriate university guidelines; conducting patient follow-up activities; and resolving data queries.

d. Appointees may be expected to review literature for background information and emerging science relevant to emergency medicine research projects and research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to their sub-specialty area.

e. Participate in training for enrollment and data collection activities (such as procedures involving innovative diagnostic and treatment equipment, neurocognitive testing and other follow-up testing of research participants), developing expert skills in assessing patients and coding/scoring assessments performed by others.

f. Coordinate and participate in dissemination activities to support an application for federal exemption from informed consent for emergency research

II. Professional Competency and Activity (15%)
A. Appointees will complete and maintain IRB required education and study specific training for clinical research.

a. Complete and maintain CITI course certification for Biomedical Researchers and Good Clinical Practice.

b. Attend and participate in Emergency Medicine Research-In-Progress forums, PECARN network teleconferences and meetings, and in regular study meetings with the PI and other investigators where progress of the work is discussed.

c. Participate in the PECARN Research Coordinator Advisory Committee as appropriate and complete assignments delegated by this professional committee.

d. Participate in protocol reviews for new studies and provide substantive feedback on content and implementation.

III. University and Public Service (5%)
A. Participate with investigators and study team in presentations to the academic community, lay community and service providers for participant recruitment purposes and public disclosure activities.

B. Participate in activities of committees within the department, School of Medicine, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.
This position will be located primarily in the Emergency Department. Work hours to be arranged, but evening and some weekend hours are required. Restricted vacation during peak periods.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related field required with a minimum of 6 months experience in laboratory, clinical or applied research.
  2. Completion of the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Biomedical Researchers and Good Clinical Practice training programs within 30 days of hiring.
  3. Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrating professionalism, compassion and resourcefulness when interacting with a diverse population of patients and families.
  4. Ability to read and understand clinical protocols with careful attention to detail and to implement a broad range of activities as specified by clinical study protocols.
  5. Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and elicit information from patients, patient’s families, physicians, hospital staff and a wide variety of health care professionals with varying levels of ability to understand.
  6. Ability to read and understand patient medical records, abstract clinical data from medical records and record accurately on case report forms and/or in electronic databases.
  7. Display organizational skills to coordinate multiple tasks, to appropriately prioritize workload, and to maintain thorough and accurate study documentation.
  8. Computer skills sufficient to effectively use MS Word, Excel, web interfaces, patient or research databases, and electronic health record system.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

  1. Some classroom experience in laboratory, clinical and/or applied research.
  2. Work or volunteer experience in an Emergency Department setting.
  3. Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and procedures to effectively interpret and accurately compile data according to study protocol.
