Sophomore Career Education Milestones

Explore your interests, both inside and outside of the classroom, and be open to all the possibilities you can pursue with your degree and experiences at UR. 

Designing Your Life (CASC 104) is a 1-credit course that will enable you to hone your interests and skills and test out career aspirations.  
– Build a cohort, make sense of resources, and maximize your time at the U of R.

Continue your exploration of career options related to your interests, skills, and major decisions.
– The Greene Center’s Major Pathways and Career Outcomes page will help you get started & see what UR alumni from various majors have gone on to do. 
What Can I do with this Major? will help you brainstorm all the directions you can go in by major!

Get to know what companies hire roles you are exploring, their work environments, and recruiting timelines.
– Did you know that you can follow companies of interest through social media and Firsthand?
– Explore top employers, job titles, and skills and competencies associated with your career of interest through the Research Industries Tool.

Interested in graduate school? Now is a great time to explore your reasons for pursuing graduate school, the process, and entrance exams and connect with faculty who may be able to advise you. Learn more about the graduate school process!


A great way to explore your curiosities is to try it out and see if it’s a good fit for you. This could be an independent project, campus job, internship, research opportunity, class and/or volunteering. There are so many different ways you can build a unique experience simply by trying stuff out and exploring different ideas!

Try out career options and build skills through virtual internships and on-line courses.
– Would you like work on projects being done at leading companies and test out a career field? You can do that virtually through Forage and Parker Dewey.

Become active in student organizations, career-related clubs, and professional associations to continue to build the skills and competencies that employers and graduate schools are looking for.
– Consider joining and serving in a leadership capacity with the over 270 student organizations available at Rochester.
– Gain skills and competencies like oral and written communication, problem-solving, and information management through on-campus employment!

Attend Greene Center events to explore careers, narrow your focus, and connect with alumni who can help you do that.
– Be on the lookout for Greene Center Signature Events and Career Expos offered twice a year.


One of the best ways to learn about possibilities and what inspires you is to talk to people: other students, alumni, faculty, staff, family, employers… and just listen, ask questions, and take it in. 

Network with alumni, peers, faculty, employers, and staff members.
– Schedule career conversations with alumni of interest on The Meliora Collective, the University’s professional online community!
– Consider participating in their fall and spring semester 3-month mentorship program.

Attend the Career Exploration Summit on January 25, 2025 to connect with diverse alumni and explore experiential learning opportunities.

This is about sharing what inspires you, your key accomplishments and skills, and all that you are learning at UR and connecting all of this to where you want to go next. 

Update your resume and LinkedIn profile with your new skills, experiences, and accomplishments.
– Pay attention to what employers are looking for when they use LinkedIn for their hiring needs.
