In 2022, over 70% of applicants took one gap year prior to matriculating into medical school, according to the AAMC. With the average age of medical students around 24 years old, many applicants are choosing to take more time to ensure they are the best applicant they can be.
There are many medical students who take more time away, however, like Brittnee Cagle-White, who was 32 when she was in her second year of medical school. Or Christopher Leavey, who was 55 when in his third year at Tulane University School of Medicine.
