The national shortage of primary care physicians has impacted rural areas especially. In the past six years between 2017 and 2023, rural family physicians have decreased, according to an article published by University of Rochester Medicine: Physician Shortage in Rural Areas of the U.S. Worsened Since 2017.
Academic health systems are therefore working to support rural hospitals though through resident placement, electronic collaboration, and clinical trials too.
