NYS Association of County Health Officials Summer 2025 Internship | Apply soon!

The Workforce Development Intern will play a key role in supporting NYSACHO’s workforce development initiatives for local health departments (LHDs), with a primary focus on the association’s Enumeration of the Local Health Department Workforce Study. Conducted in partnership with the Region 2 Public Health Training Center, this study analyzes workforce trends to inform advocacy efforts, technical assistance, and workforce planning for LHDs across New York State. In addition, the intern will contribute to NYSACHO’s Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) Accreditation Workgroup, assisting LHDs in their accreditation efforts by supporting research, meeting coordination, and resource development.

Beyond these core projects, the intern will have opportunities to engage with a variety of NYSACHO’s public health initiatives, including immunization, harm reduction, climate change, environmental health, and broader public health efforts. This role will provide hands-on experience in public health research, workforce development, and accreditation support, with the potential for travel to LHDs across New York State for shadowing experiences and short-term projects. The intern will report to NYSACHO’s Associate Program Director, Workforce Development (who oversees the Public Health Infrastructure Grant) and will receive regular guidance, feedback, and mentorship. Eligible students have:

  • Undergraduate student pursuing a degree in public health, biology, chemistry, nursing, social sciences, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience in data analysis and interpretation preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Interest in public health workforce development.
  • Valid driver’s license (preferred for travel opportunities).

This is a great opportunity to develop data visualizations, assist with research reports, support research, and to travel to on-site projects for Local Health Departments! This position can also be done in-person, remotely, or hybrid, with a preference for candidates who can occasionally visit the office in Lantham, NY. Gap Year Position: AmeriCorps Member at CityYear, Various Locations | Applications Due May 2

City Year AmeriCorps members support students’ social, emotional and academic development while providing schools with additional capacity to enhance learning and belonging. In 29 locations across the country, AmeriCorps members serve full time from August 2025 through June 2026 as tutors and mentors, working on teams and in collaboration with our public-school partners to provide additional adult support to students who need it.

During their year in service, City Year AmeriCorps Members receive a living stipend, health benefits, professional development, student loan forbearance, an education award of approximately $7,400, and access to a variety of graduate school scholarships through our University Partnerships program. UR PreDoc Program | Applications Due May 31

The UR PreDoc program provides a 2-year longitudinal experiences with the goal of promoting exposure to, and interest in clinical medicine for undergraduate students in Rochester who identify from backgrounds that have been historically minoritized in medicine. In this program, you will receive mentorship from local senior physician leaders at URMC as well as local medical students, gain access to scholarly and career development opportunities, gain shadowing and research experiences, and learn more about the medical field in general! NYS Department of Health Student Assistant, Various NYS Locations | Applications Due June 1, 2025

If you enjoy the outdoors and have a passion for the environment and public health, then you might enjoy being a Student Assistant with the NYS Department of Health’s Center for Environmental Health (CEH)! You will support the mission of CEH by performing a variety of environmental health functions, and may also perform environmental health inspection functions in the field for the purposes of ensuring compliance with the New York State Sanitary Code and environmental health regulations. NYS Department of Health Office Assistant, Various NYS Locations | Applications Due June 1, 2025

Office Assistant staff support the mission of Center of Environmental Health (CEH) by performing a variety of administrative functions during New York State’s summer season and beyond. Positions assist CEH district office environmental health staff by performing a variety of critical administrative support functions such as answering office telephones, triaging calls, sorting and distributing mail, filing documents, maintaining office file systems, and performing data entry. This role provides interested individuals with the ability to gain real world experience in the field of public health.
