Applicants to medical, dental, and veterinary schools often wonder about testing requirements, including the Casper assessment and the PREView examination. As you prepare for the upcoming cycle, check out these questions and links to help you get started.
The Casper Assessment
What is the Casper assessment?
The Casper assessment is an online situational judgement test (SJT) which asks what you would do in a difficult situation. According to Acuity Insights, it broadly assesses your skills in collaboration, communication, empathy, ethics, and problem-solving, amongst other areas. To learn more about the Casper assessment, check out this blog post.
Which schools require the Casper assessment?
A list of schools which require the Casper assessment can be found here at the end of this blog. Always be sure to check the specific school for their requirements as well.
How does the Casper exam work?
In the 2025-2026 application cycle, the Casper assessment includes two main sections: video responses and typed responses. You will be provided a scenario for each question.
For video responses, each scenario will ask you two open-ended questions. You will have one minute to record a video for each response. For typed responses, you will type answers to two open-ended questions within 3.5 minutes. Acuity Insights also provides you with more information on the time for the exam and the structure.
To see what the sections look like, check out their link here also.
When should I take the Casper exam?
Remember that different schools have different deadlines for taking Casper. The last possible test date for each medical school that requires it is listed at the end of this guide.
However, just because a school might let you take the Casper until November or January doesn’t mean you should put it off until then. We recommend that you register for the Casper test in April or May of your application year and take the exam while preparing your primaries (i.e., your AMCAS application)—or soon after—because a few schools have begun requiring a Casper score before they review your application. You want your Casper results to reach med schools by the time you submit your secondary applications in July.
What are the test dates?
The Casper test is offered at least once a month, with most test dates available in the summer and early fall. It can be taken on any computer with an internet connection (Acuity explicitly discourages using a tablet or other mobile device to take the test). Specific test dates can be found on the Acuity Insights website. Acuity Insights also recommends registering for the exam at least three days before your test date to allow enough time for account verification and payment processing.
After testing, results will be sent automatically to individual schools within 2-3 weeks. You will be able to see the status updated in your application portal.

The PREView Examination
What is the PREView?
According to the AAMC, the PREView examination is an online situational judgement exam that includes text-based scenarios focusing on ethical scenarios that you may encounter in medical school. It will assess your behavioral response to each scenario to measure professional competencies for pre-med students such as interpersonal skills, communication, teamwork, and commitment to learning and growth.
Which schools require the PREView examination?
The AAMC provides a list of schools which require the PREView examination. Some schools require the examination, while others recommend it. Always be sure to check the individual schools you are applying to.
How does PREView work?
The PREView exam includes 186 multiple choice questions in one test section. Questions will focus on text-based scenarios that are linked to the core competencies for medical school. The AAMC states that, following each scenario, you will be asked to rate a series of behaviors between 1 to 4 based on their effectiveness as a response to the situation.
The test itself will be 75 minutes total. Be sure to check your computer for compatibility and go through the test timing here prior to the examination. The PREView Test Day Experience Video also provides a good summary of what you should keep in mind for the exam format and structure, and considerations for test day.
When should I take the PREView exam?
Ideally, you should take your AAMC PREView exam by or before the May test date of your application cycle year. This will allow you to receive your score around the same time schools send you secondary applications.
What are the test dates?
The PREView examination is offered on two days each month between April and September. Scores will be released about 30 days after the testing window. You can find the PREView testing dates here, along with the last day you can register and the day in which scores will be released.
How do I prepare for the PREView?
The AAMC provides resources to help you prepare for the PREView examination, including a PREView Sample with sample questions meant to help you familiarize yourself with the questions, the PREView Preparation Guide that explains the formatting and questions, and multiple practice examinations – be sure to check out the link here for more, and for webinars to help you prepare too.
