Greene Center and Career Community Programs

Schwartz Community Based Internships | Applications Due Sunday, February 23

The 2025 Schwartz Community Based Internships, funded by the Schwartz Family Foundation, connects students to paid internship opportunities with non-profit organizations in the Rochester area. This includes organizations such as the YMCA, Susan B. Anthony House, American Red Cross, United Way, The Strong National Museum of Play, and more working in diverse roles. You will receive:

  • $5000 stipend
  • Two summer excursions
  • End-of-summer celebration with the Schwartz Family
  • Internship credit (with transcript notation)
  • A dedicated career advisor

Past to Present: Alumni Roadmap to Networking | Tuesday, February 25 from 5:30-7pm in the Feldman Ballroom

Join us for an evening of connecting with alumni, with a focus on historically marginalized communities, to hear their experiences navigating the workplace and building social capital within various fields and career paths. There will be a 20-minute panel followed by small-group discussions. A dinner buffet will be provided, so register here and check out the many alum who will be joining us!

Hosted by the Greene Center and OMSA with co-sponsorships from University of Rochester student organizations: Douglass Leadership House (DLH), Minority Male Leadership Association (MMLA), Black Students’ Union (BSU), Women’s Leadership Alliance (WLA), Minority Student Advisory Board (MSAB).

International Connections | Thursday, February 27 from 5:30-7pm in the Humanities Center Conference Room D

The evening will feature international alumni who have studied and worked in the U.S. sharing their experiences navigating the workplace across various industries and career paths, so register here! Alumni will join us virtually, while students gather on campus for interactive and meaningful conversations. The event will include:

  • Alumni-led discussions about their professional journeys.
  • A Q&A session to address students’ questions.
  • Dedicated networking time for students to engage with alumni and peers.

Montefiore Medical Center Volunteer Opportunities in Bronx, NY | Insert Name of Event/Internship/Job Opportunity

If you live in New York or the Bronx and are searching for a volunteer opportunity, check out these options at the Montefiore Medical Center. These are great ways to gain exposure to the healthcare environment, network, develop skills, and learn more about patient care! Keep in mind that volunteers must commit to 100 hours of volunteering working 3-4 hours per shift. To apply, and to learn more, check out the individual positions and applications below: 

Child Life provides a therapeutic play program to help children and their families cope with the hospitalization experience. Volunteers can organize playroom groups for games, art, music, video games, and more. They can engage in bedside visits with individual patients for crafts and games. 

Pre-PT Students provide indirect patient care; check the link to learn more! Applicants must be applying or have applied to PT/OT school. This program does NOT allow clinical patient contact.

Pre-OT – Students provide indirect patient care; check the link to learn more! Applicants must be applying or have applied to PT/OT school. This program does NOT allow clinical patient contact.

Perioperative Rounding Volunteers provide comfort and assistance for patients and their loved ones during potentially stressful times for outpatient procedures. They also provide staff with non-clinical support by assisting with administrative tasks and rounding on patients, families, and visitors. 

Nursing Unit Comfort Care and Other Opportunities Nursing Floor Volunteers visit patients to help enhance the patient experience. Some duties include but are not limited to: rounding, answering call bells, providing comfort by offering water/ ice/ blankets, speak with and read to the patients, and greeting visitors.

Georgetown University MS in Pharmacology and Physiology Info Sessions | Dates and Times Vary, Virtual

MS in Pharmacology Virtual Information Session: Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM

This is a one-year, non-thesis degree program that offers a foundation of rigorous coursework as well as the option to do research or tailor the curriculum with a selection of elective courses from across our biomedical departments. Typical cohorts of 15-20 students benefits from a small class size in our main pharmacology courses and receives personalized attention from our faculty, whether in the classroom or in the laboratory. Core courses are taught by a team of departmental faculty and researchers, many of whom also teach in the medical school.

Master’s in Physiology Admissions Chat: Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM

The Master’s in Physiology (“regular” program) is a one-year, non-thesis, pre-health master’s degree program designed as an opportunity for pre-health college graduates to strengthen their competitiveness and readiness for medical school, dental school, allied health programs, or PhD programs in the biomedical sciences. Students are challenged with a rigorous curriculum and receive expert advising and support from medical center faculty.

Research in Health Equity Symposium at URSMD | Friday, February 28 in Person at URSMD or Virtual 

The Department of Medicine invites members of the University and surrounding communities to attend the 3rd annual Research in Health Equity Symposium. This year’s symposium places a special emphasis on research addressing community outreach and engagement, including but not limited to community-based participatory research, community health literacy, outreach efforts to Rochester communities, LGBTQ+ care, engaging patient voice in clinical research, and efforts to increase diversity in medical education. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Wally Smith from Virginia Commonwealth University as our keynote speaker. Learn more and register here!

An Evening with Dr. Henry S. Friedman, MD ’73 | March 3 from 7-8pm, Virtual 

We have Dr. Henry S. Friedman, a top neurosurgeon in the US and U of R alumni, presenting a Medallion workshop on March 3rd from 7-8pm! Dr. Friedman is an internationally renowned adult and pediatric neuro-oncologist who helps to lead The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, and will be talking about his career path and leadership experiences while answering questions from student attendees. Rural Medicine: Pre-Medical Recruitment Fair in Nashville, TN | Saturday, March 8 from 4:30-6:30pm (CST)

For anyone interested in rural medicine, check out the Pre-Medical Recruitment Fair held in conjunction with the VCOM National Rural Medicine Conference. This is an opportunity for anyone interested in medical school to meet representatives from 19 leading medical schools and to explore programs tailored for rural and underserved communities. This will be an in-person event on Saturday, March 8 between 4:30-6:30pm in Nashville, TN.

URSMD MAPS Visit Day | Friday, March 28 between 11am and 3:30pm – Register by March 14

Join the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry for MAPS Visit Day on March 28 to learn more about the medical school admissions process, summer research opportunities, have lunch with current students, view simulation demonstrations, and tour the medical center!
