Online Study Resources: MCAT, DAT, GRE

For those of you preparing for medical, dental, veterinary, or other professional programs, you will need to be sure you have completed any required standardized tests prior to applying – which means finding some good study resources! While every applicant’s timeline for testing or studying may be different, we did search for some potential resources to get you started with the process. Many of these are free, although some do require registration.

Keep in mind that we have tailored this list to include many free online options, and that this is not an exhaustive list of available study resources. We would encourage you to explore other resources as well. Since different resources aid different people with various learning styles too, be sure to use those that work best for you!

Also be aware that not all programs will need one of these three exams. For example, fields like Optometry will require the OAT, and only a few veterinary schools require the GRE; always check individual schools for their testing requirements.

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

MCAT scores will range from 472 to 528. It will take about 6 weeks to receive your score, so be sure to consider your timeline prior to applying. Podiatry schools also require this exam.

Khan Academy – Offers a free course to help prepare you for the MCAT, with lesson plans to click through.

AAMC – Provides free planning and study resources, including a free practice exam, sample test, Khan video collection, and a YouTube playlist to help prepare you.

The Princeton Review – Includes a free practice test and assessment quiz (does require registration) and an MCAT study app.

Kaplan – Includes a test and starter pack, which is free for 30 days; to continue to see it, or to have access to more resources, you would need to subscribe.

Dental Admission Test (DAT)

The DAT has instituted scoring changes for the test beginning on March 1, 2025. You will not receive your score immediately. You do not, however, need to retest if you have a score that uses the old system. For more information, check out the ADEA FAQ page.

Kaplan – Offers a free practice test, although you do need to sign up.

ADA – Provides a DAT applicant guide with information on the exam structure and sections.

ADA – Free DAT sample test.

Test Prep Review – Includes DAT practice test questions.

The Princeton Review – Provides one free practice test.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

Only 2 veterinary medicine schools require the GRE. Some public health programs will require the GRE, as well as audiology and physical therapy. Prior to applying, be sure to check the requirements for your chosen schools.

ETS – Check here for general strategies and tips for exam sections and taking the exam.

ETS – Provides two free options for studying, including information to help you familiarize yourself with the test and two practice tests meant to simulate the real version.
