Resources, Opportunities, and Events for BIPOC Students

With January finally over and 2025 in full swing now, those of us at the Greene Center wanted to take this opportunity to provide information and resources meant to support BIPOC students:

  • Check out the Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) on the second floor of Dewey Hall (2-161). With many students describing their office as their “home away from home,” you are welcome to stop by for further support.
  • The University Counseling Center provides both individual and group therapy sessions. Individual therapy sessions can be scheduled here. Group therapy sessions can range depending on the types of group, with sessions including the Anxiety Toolbox Workshop, the Mindfulness Group, and the MOSAIC Group, which is specifically meant for students seeking support in navigating a predominantly white institution. Check out the sessions and times here.
  • Try out meditation through “Meditative Guide for Us,” a program designed to support the University’s Black community. Through techniques like deep breathing, visualization, and guided meditation, the class creates a safe space to address racial stress, prioritize self-care, and unlock your creative potential. You can join the one-time workshop on Sunday, February 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or register for the four-week course starting on March 20.

We also wanted to provide everyone with some wonderful opportunities to learn more about and celebrate Black History Month this month:

Finally, check out some of the events and opportunities coming up for students as well:

  • Past to Present: Alumni Roadmap to Networking – Network and connect with University of Rochester alumni on Tuesday, February 25 from 5:30pm-7pm! With a focus on historically marginalized communities, join us for an evening of connecting with alumni to hear their experiences navigating the workplace and building social capital within various fields and career paths. To help prepare, this article provides some great tips on getting started with networking: Work the Room: How to Be the Star at a Networking Event.
  • URSMD MAPS Visit Day – Join us on Friday, March 28 from 11am until 3:30pm to learn about the medical school admissions process, summer research opportunities, have lunch with current students, view simulation demonstrations, and tour the medical center! Register here by March 14.
  • UR PreDoc Program – The UR PreDoc program provides longitudinal experiences with the goal of promoting exposure to, and interest in clinical medicine for undergraduate students in Rochester who identify from backgrounds that have been historically minoritized in medicine. This program includes mentorship, career development, and scholarly development. Applications open March 15 and are due by May 31, so check out application details here.
