Article Share-Out: How To Align Your Career Path With Your Personal Values

Hello, Social Good Community! Are you feeling the icy chill of the season? Yep, it’s winter in Rochester once more! Here’s something to aid you in your return to campus.

For this month’s article share-out, I wish to take a moment to spotlight this recent article from Forbes that details some ways that you can learn more about how your personal values and your career trajectory or trajectories intertwine. Especially in a new calendar year, when we’re making New Year’s resolutions or looking forward to what we determine is important in ourselves and what we wish to see in the world around us, it can pay dividends to examine what your personal values are and how you can then imbue your career search journey (and our meetings together) with these core facets in mind.

In addition to this article, I want to spotlight some resources that have assisted me and are guaranteed to assist you in the ever-changing, dynamic quest for values-driven career action in your life.

  1. PathwayU. As an alumna and a returning graduate, I consider PathwayU to be a wonderful support for interlinking your personal values to your academic, personal, and career trajectories. After taking a series of short and sweet personality quizzes, you’ll then be faced with up-to-date industry information and career matches, as well as University of Rochester tracks you can take to secure positions in that realm!
  2. Think2Perform’s Values Exercise. This card-sorting exercise can be performed both online and with physical cards, making for a satisfying and interesting way to sort out what feels most important in your life at this time. You can even add in custom cards if you don’t see a personal value represented in the website’s set.
  3. My Next Move. Powered by the U.S. Department of Labor’s labyrinthian career search inventories, My Next Move contains lots of helpful information (and quizzes to take) in order to match you with results and career shifts that matter to you. Here you’ll find relevant job outlooks, skills you need, and other ways to learn more and get involved.

If you’d like to discuss how to implement these tools and other strategies for values-driven action, or if you have any other career-related concerns, please schedule an appointment with a Greene Center advisor through Handshake today.

With these considerations in mind, and the relentless determination, consideration, and drive that I’ve witnessed from everyone I’ve been privileged to meet with so far this year, I have zero doubt in my mind that you will discover opportunities that are extraordinarily exciting and fulfilling. Here’s to a great Spring semester, Meliora!
