The Best Features on Handshake

Handshake is the perfect tool for finding jobs and internships. It has helped me snag various opportunities on and off campus. Handshake is easy to navigate and has features that filter based on your career interests, and notify you about events related to that field. It’s made the job search less tedious and provided me with a variety of resources.

There are lots of features on Handshake, but here are my favorites. Some are pretty obvious, but some you might not know about!

Jobs

This tab provides a list of all the available jobs and internships on and off campus. You can sort the listings based on relevance, expiration date, and date posted, and filter by job type, keyword, and zip code. Once you create a profile, it will make suggestions for jobs you might be interested in, based on your career goals. This tab also lets you search for employees, add an interview to a calendar, and access all your applications.

Resources

This is found under the Career Center tab. It contains various resources available from the Greene Center such as My Visa Jobs, Transitions Abroad, Bio Careers, and so much more. These can all help you start or further your career.

Events Tab

This informs you of programs available for different career paths. You can search for events, find career fairs, and even explore jobs. Once a profile is complete, you get notified of events happening based on your career field.

Career Paths

This allows you to explore roles and their average salaries. You can view different fields, jobs available, average salaries, and top cities for the role.

Appointments

You can schedule appointments with the Greene Center through Handshake. You can do this by clicking on the Career Center Tab, and then clicking on schedule appointment on the lower right. This will allow you to select the kind of appointment and pick a date. You can also select a specific advisor in your field to meet with.

Community

The Community tab allows you to connect with students and alumni not only from the U of R, but other colleges as well. You can view their profile, filter by major, school year student organization and so much more. You can also network with them through the tab.

Handshake makes searching for jobs and internships easy and less tedious. All it takes is your net ID and password to log in and gain access to an abundance of resources and opportunities.
